As you can imagine, having a knowledgeable team of technicians that are expertly trained and properly certified is important to us! That’s why the North American Technician Excellence or NATE certification is a must for everyone on our technician team. Here are a couple questions we know smart homeowners are asking – and our answers to them.

What Does It Mean to be NATE Certified?

an HVAC technician reading gauges by an air condition unitNorth American Technician Excellence (NATE) is the nation’s largest non-profit certification organization for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) technicians. The NATE organization has a vision of being the industry leader in developing and recognizing HVACR technicians. They do this by providing a series of tests that are produced by a committee of industry experts from all over the nation. This rigorous testing process is designed to make sure that HVACR technicians contain the knowledge and skills needed to carry out expert work, while meeting the current industry standards.

The NATE certification came out over 20 years ago when a number of industry leaders noticed that there was a lack of standards in place for HVACR professionals. Without these standards, customers were forced to rely on instinct when hiring someone to help with their HVACR problems. This meant that there were ample opportunities for customers to spend money on sub-quality jobs. Even well-meaning HVACR were often unable to hire quality technicians because they were limited by their own knowledge and training.

In February of 1997, a coalition made up of contractors, distributors, manufacturers, and utility providers and other trades was established. Funding from a loan backed by the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute (ARI) and the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) was granted… and NATE was born! A board of trustees was selected and sector committees were determined. Together they created the first NATE certification tests.

Has the NATE Certification evolved over the years?

Absolutely. In an ever-evolving industry like this one, testing and certifications should change as technologies improve and new coding requirements and laws are formed. So, as technology, available materials, pricing, and equipment has changed over the years, so too has the NATE certification tests.

What Other Credentials Should I Look for in an HVAC Company?
